Soil properties and tree growth at medieval ridge and furrow sites in Brandenburg, northeastern Germany

Background Ridge and furrow (RIFU) systems associated soils are a widespread legacy of medieval agriculture, archives historical land use, might affect recent ecosystems. Open questions about RIFU formation potential effects still exist, especially related to physical soil properties. Aims Our aims were (1) characterize the properties (2) compare drought sensitivity growth resistance in extremely dry years trees growing on ridges furrows, respectively. Methods We studied (bulk density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, texture) chemical (soil pH, organic matter, nitrogen content) climate tree for three study sites Prignitz, Germany. Results showed high spatial heterogeneity stratigraphy due ridge construction increased accumulation moisture matter furrows post-abandonment pedogenesis. Slight differences found, with air capacity higher available water contents soils. No observed except wet site, where sensitivity. Resistance tended be similar or increase from ridges. Conclusions The results reflect differentiation pedogenesis abandoned suggest an adaption different conditions through construction.
